French loudspeaker manufacturer APG (Active Audio) set up its system in the semi-anechoic room at the Centre de Transfert de Technologie (CTTM) in Le Mans. Pilah, a specialist in dub and particularly its energetic version, stepper, took over the space. He composes radical, rootsy tracks that are a cross between reggae and traditional dub.
The DUB Re-Evolution project, created by Pilah for the Le Mans Sonore event, takes advantage of the spatialization capabilities of the NESS software developed by the Arbane group.
NESS, an immersive solution for everyone
NESS, based on open source principles and algorithms such as Max/MSP, is a free, independent application made available by Arbane. Running on both Mac and PC, and compatible with any USB or Dante sound card, NESS manages up to 16 sources and 32 output channels. Feedback, such as that received at the Le Mans Sonore event, is used to fine-tune the software.
NESS is based on a version derived from the principle of wavefront synthesis (WFS) for spatialization. Compatible with OSC and MIDI protocols, it adapts to a wide variety of workflows. What's more, NESS is agnostic when it comes to loudspeaker brands and models, although Arbane recommends the APG IX point-source range, thanks to its wide dispersion, which allows immersive coverage of large spaces.
This series includes five woofer models (5, 6, 8, 12 and 15 inches) combined with a 1 or 1.4 inch tweeter, available in indoor and outdoor versions. The drivers are coaxial in design.
